My daughter, Nadia,  nailed it when after one of my infamous self-doubt sessions she asked: “What is your motivation?” Good question. Why do I do it? Why do you do what you do? Why do I try to write a children’s book? Hm, I will have to think about that. Why do I run? Now there is something that I can answer. Here is my list:

  • I love it.
  • I like the way it makes me feel.
  • It gives me energy and focus.
  • It takes me to beautiful places.
  • It helps me discover places.
  • It helps me know who I am.
  • It gives me time to think.
  • Yeah, sure, it is healthy.

I am sure that I can continue.

Why do I write this blog? Why do I work for a software company? Why do I stay in India? Why do I go to church and pray? I think it all comes down to having hope. The Bible talks about a hope that renews your strength. That is as running is for me – it gives energy.

Even youths get tired and weary and young men stumble and fall. But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will fly on wings like eagles. They will run and not be weary. (I love this part) They will walk and not be faint.

This hope, combats self-doubt and inspires love. This hope makes you soar above the trivial differences and problems we have. It comes from a relationship with my Creator. It comes from being instructed and guided by Him into the purpose for which I was made.

Purpose. Such an illusive thing. And I still manage to talk myself into a hopeless pit sometimes. But when I come to my senses – usually during a nice long run – there is one name that gives me hope: Jesus. This hope was bought dearly, but is handed out for free to whoever wants to receive it. Why then do I create stories, programs, blog posts? Why do I teach science to my daughter and read bed-time stories to my son? Why do I make music? Why do I run? Because I hope.

Keep running

Stephan

P.S.  Tomorrow is the Chandigarh marathon. I will be doing the half. Hope to see many of you there.
