There is a lot of focus here in India to run further and longer. Marathons, ultramarathons, 24-hour challenges, 36-hour challenges, 100 milers and more. Crazy. And I am one of them. What I have seen is that there is not much focus on getting faster, at least not among the amateur runners.
There are various things that one can do to become faster. Interval running is one. Strength workouts in the gym or on hills is another. Often overlooked is the idea of a time trial. Now, I am not a coach and don’t want you to think that I am. But I have seen the value of doing shorter runs quick for getting faster over the longer distances as well.
So, Covalience runners have a plan to implement regular timed 5k runs here in Chandigarh. It will come with a website where someone can see all his/her previous times and see the progress. The distance will be accurately measured with the wheel. You will also be able to compare your times with those of others. And it won’t cost a lot of money.
Covalience is developing the software to make this possible. We are a Software development company after all! (And a good one at that) We are planning to have a first tentative run tomorrow at the lake with what you can call beta testers. Let’s see how that goes.

Keep running

Yes! Intervals and training runs of fast running are essential to all runners who don’t want to suffer too much in any distance, even ultras. I look forward to hearing more about the software.

We had a great timed 5k run this morning with 4 of our group of 10 breaking their person bests in the distance. We also learned some lessons about the software and the way to conduct these runs which will be valuable for the next one. We are not in a hurry about the software and mainly want to use it ourselves, but we are designing it in a way that it could be used by any number of groups. Let’s see where it takes us.
